VLC Media Player
So, I was going to post a review on another app today, when some alarming information came up while browsing a few of my favorite blogs. A recently released app, VLC Media Player for Windows, is the most versatile video player for Windows Mac, Linux, and now iOS. Unfortunately, VLC was released under the GPL (General Public License.) Because of this, the makers of the program can not legally publish this app in the app store due to violations of the GPL. The GPL states that anyone may share, or copy the created content, and will not be restricted to one copy a user. The app store lets you download apps for free, but the app is limited to the person’s account that downloads the app. Therefore, the GPL is violated. Most likely, this app will be in the store for a short time now, so anyone wishing to download this player must do so shortly. The question is if it is really worth getting. Lets go through it.
Device Compatibility
VLC Media Player is compatible with all iOS devices.
Connect to iTunes
If you do not have any videos on your phone, VLC will request you connect your phone or iPad to iTunes file sharing on your computer.
Video List area
Once you have loaded videos on your device, VLC will show the full list of videos. This will tell you the video name, the time and the size of the selected video. VoiceOver works perfectly with this section. Double tapping or split tapping will start the selected video. To delete a video, double tap the edit button in the top right corner of the screen.
About VLC
To find out more about VLC, find and double tap the About button in the top left corner of the screen.
Video Playback
So you have selected and started to play a video. Now what can you do? The video playback interface for VLC is the exact same interface for the videos you watch on YouTube, the iPod app, and any other video playback app. All buttons are read to the user by VoiceOver.
Conclusion
So, you may be wondering now why you should even think about getting this program, because it sounds just like any other video player in the app store, and who cares that it may be going away soon. VLC Media player is just like any other video player in the app store, but it can play almost any video format out there. This means that it will play MP4, AVI, Divx, Xvid, OGM, MKV, WMV (unprotected of course!) and many many others. In addition, it is fully accessible! If you have a lot of videos on your computer that will not play on your phone normally, then I urge you to get this app.
