NPR for iOS

A friend of mine asked me to look over the NPR (National Public Radio) app for iOS, and see if it is VoiceOver compliant. I have good news for all NPR listeners. This app is completely compliant. All buttons and menu items work. The only thing it would not read was their graphical logo. LOL. Here is some of what you can expect from the app.

News

This is the first section of the app. It contains all recent news talked about on NPR radio. You may even listen to the article as it was talked about on the radio. You can view top stories, Stories by topic, or listen or read the most recent  newscast.

Programs

This section will let you read about and listen to all of the NPR aired programs, such as, “All Things Considered.” The App will even tell you that the program is or is not on the air. Once you select a program, you can select which story or topic to listen to, or the entire program.

Station

This section will let you listen to the nearest NPR station. This may be determined by entering a zip code, or using location services to find your nearest location.

Playlists

Here you will find any playlists you have made in the app. Playlists can be made in the now playing window while any program is playing.

More

Here you will find all relevant settings to the app. The about section can also be found here, and so can links to NPR related sites.

Conclusion

The creators of the NPR app have done a great job in adding functionality while keeping accessibility in mind. The only issue I ran in to was a crash while going through the choices. This can happen in any app, but I would be careful while running in VoiceOver. VoiceOver uses more memory, so apps can be more likely to crash.

I use the NPR app all of the time, and it’s terrific.
I find it especially helpful when I’m traveling, and I can easily find the stations in the area.
It is also simple to add stations to the favorites list.
